Comcast (Etilities Forum) recently announced that it will offer free basic cable for new users who also sign up for Comcast internet or phone services. This move, aimed to ease the transition of Digital Broadcast (DTV) for those still using over-the-air analog signals will surely be welcomed by new users looking for an answer to the government-mandated transition on Feb 17, 2009.
For existing users of Comcast services, however, the news isn’t as good. Wired recently reported that Comcast is raising prices for consumers in specific markets such as Maryland, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and perhaps others. These increased prices are meant to account for “gas prices, health insurance costs, technology and service improvements.” With profits increasing, Comcast seems to have weathered most of the impact of the economic downturn to date. Some wonder whether this move will alienate more users than it will attract.
